Jacqui's Birthday Cake

Last week I made this cake for my friend Jacqui's 24th birthday. This was my birthday gift to her, so I really wanted it to be special. Of course it had to be delicious, but I also wanted it to be modern and feminine, just like her.

As you can see it is a black and white striped round box with a white lid, and topped with a fuchsia bow. I also covered the cake board in the same colour fondant, but this hasn't quite come out in these photos with the lighting. The pink was definitely more fucshia than hot pink, created using Wilton 'Rose'. At any rate, I think it makes for a really striking and classic combination.

Working with black and white fondant sounds simple, but it's actually quite tricky to do. For this cake I covered the whole cake with fondant before attaching the rolled strips one by one to the sides and smoothing them over so that they looked as is they joined, but without any unsightly black smudging!

Jacqui shared the cake with friends over drinks at the Opera Bar, and after a few, this fondant bow ended up adorning the birthday girl's head! ha ha :)

Should I ever realise one of my (many) dreams to become a professional cake decorator, this design will be known as The Jacqui!

This is a short and sweet post today, so I thought I'd make it worth your while by making my very first cameo appearance on my blog! Here's a picture of me, Ladybird (left) and Jac (right) with the cake...

Love,

Ladybird x

  8. Thank you for all of your lovely comments, I am buoyed by your encouraging words :)

The fondant ribbon was not sticky at all actually, so it would stay on your head so long as you can balance it ;) hehe. Once fondant dries it is firm and dry to touch, unless it is exposed to moisture (in which case it gets gooey and sticky)
